Multimedia Technology Week 2

In technology on week two, we watched an episode from The Office- "Conflict Resolution". I've seen that episode before, but it is funny to see how the workers in the office try to work out their differences. Then, our groups worked on our project. Save The Art is the made up non profit organization we made in order to help promote art programs in the state of Texas. Other groups had pretty cool ideas, but I think our project will be awesome as well.
The second time we came to technology, I was at College Station's Medical Clinic because I wasn't feeling well. Some of my group members worked really hard on the project, and when I came back, I tried to pitch in as much as I could. I can't wait to present our project to the class on week three.

First Week of The Texas Governor's School

This first week of the Governor's School felt like a roller coaster of emotions for me: excited, scared, stressed, sad, happy, frustrated, etc. I really appreciate the opportunity for coming here because I know it will prepare me for my future and make me stronger as an urban leader.
Since this week has been hectic and we haven't gotten our computer access yet, I borrowed some one's laptop and decided I'll make one blog about everything I've learned this far. I know some teachers are fine with this, but if there is a teacher that doesn't like this idea, please let me know. I want to do my best in each class, so I'll be ok if I have to do an extra entry.
I remember the first night for me was rough. I was alone and didn't want my family to leave. I eventually got over my fears and remembered it was my choice to come to this summer program. I needed to suck it up and try to meet people. I met the girls across the hall from me and they were pretty cool. Making friends was easier than I thought it would be here.
Anyways, the first class I had to take was ethics. At first, I wasn't exactly sure what ethics was and decided to give the class a chance. I'm glad I did because Mr. Rivers and Mr. Ortwein are awesome teachers. They really get us students active into debatable topics and we all end up having a great time. I also enjoyed learning from Dr. Slattery. He taught us about the three branches of philosophy: metaphysics, epistemology, and axiology. Also, he taught us that the four branches of ethics are deonotolgy, teleology, existentialism, and postmodernism. In class, we broke into groups to debate about why people should choose a certain branch of ethics and I chose to be in teleology. Even though our group lost some people, we will continue to try to influence other classmates to join us. Ethics is one of my favorite classes and I realized I have a huge interest in it. I'm going to probably take classes of ethics at my school (if ethics offered) or take some in college. It is very fascinating.
The next class I had to take was multimedia technology. Ms. Cornelius, Mr. Morton, and Ms. Woods are all really fun and pretty cool. The first day in class we played for getting to know you games: two truths and a lie, signature game, signs game, and song battle. It was really fun and I enjoyed learning more about my classmates. The second day we had multimedia technology, we learned about numerous leadership styles like people-oriented leadership, servant leadership, charismatic leadership, transactional leadership, etc. Then, in our groups we talked about differences in urban, rural, and suburban societies. It was interesting to look at the multiple differences between all three societies. Ms. Cornelius gave us an introduction to graphic design. I, personally, love doing projects on the computer and found out a bunch of things I haven't learned yet. One of my main reasons for coming to the Governor's School was to take this technology class. I really want to pursue some type of computer design when I go to college and wanted to get a head start in that education now.
My third class was visual arts with Dr. Carpenter, Ms. Leal-Powers, and Ms. Munoz. I've only been to this class once and enjoyed all of the teachers. They seem like they are hard to impress, so I'm going to have to work super hard to get noticed. Visual art is not my strongest class here at the Governor's School. I hope I'll be able to surprise myself and learn a lot of valuable information from this class. In class so far, we had to make four rows of chairs: two facing the back of the room and two facing the front. Two groups had to describe a picture they saw in the front of the room to the two rows that were facing the back. I probably just confused anyone who reads this. I'm sorry about that, but I'll just say it was really fun. We also had to write a poem about an object in a painting. I'm too embarrassed to post mine, since it wasn't that great, in my opinion.
Last but not least is multicultural education. I'm glad they gave us this class at the Governor's School. Dr. Carter, Ms. Williams, and Ms. Rose all seem so different from each other, but they bring a lot of original ideas to the table. The class has been moving, in my opinion. It made made me upset that I was unable to name at least five prominent people from different backgrounds in categories like Asian-Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanic-Americans. I have been wanting to look up some because they contributed to America just as much as the other races. In that class as well, we have a project to do about certain themes. My group chose discrimination and I think we'll do a good job on it. There were other themes we could have chosen like unity, culture, oppression, etc. Ever since we've identified themes, I've been seeing these themes more commonly on campus and on field trips. For the most part, it's unity. Everyone gets along just fine, no matter who or what they are. This is one of the reasons why I feel the Texas Governor's School is so great. I wish we could all feel as good as we do here at school or in the community. My school does a good job at making everyone feel important, but I know there are places that don't. You are able to see how happy some people are to be accepted and it's pretty rewarding. I'm glad I signed up for this school.
